Dog Attacks and Owner Responsibility

Have you or a loved one been attacked by an animal? Our experienced and knowledgeable staff at Thomas J. Reilly Law Firm P.C. are available to answer any questions you may have. Call (515) 209-2854 to receive proper compensation.

In the state of Iowa, the owner of a dog can be held liable for any injuries they inflict on another person. The exception to this law is if the dog is acting defensively due to another unlawful act that may be taking place.

You do not even have to legally own the dog on paper to be held accountable for an attack; as long as the dog is in your possession when the attack occurs, you are responsible.

Owner Negligence

If an individual is obviously failing to act as a responsible owner, and this causes the attack, the victim can file a negligence claim. You can even file this claim if the injuries from the attack are minor. This does not only apply to dogs, but to other wild animals being held in captivity.

Owner Liability

Many factors will have to be taken into account when considering owner liability. Was the victim intruding on private property? Was the victim taunting the animal? Does the animal have a history of aggressive behavior?

These cases can be complex, which is why it is crucial to seek out legal guidance. Contact us at (515) 209-2854 to receive a free consultation today.
